General Data Protection

On 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect throughout the European Union (EU). This applies to the personal data of clients of Speech Therapy Services (STS). Essentially, STS has an obligation to treat personal data, obtained from clients, in a secure way that is compliant with the GDPR. STS's Privacy Policy has been updated to reflect these changes. Please note that STS is required to obtain specific permissions from you in respect of data that will be held by STS (for a limited time period). Unfortunately, if STS does not obtain your consent, we will not be able to provide you with our services.

What is GDPR?

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the new legal framework governing the use of personal data across all EU markets. It is, basically, a new set of data laws fit for the digital age. It replaces the existing EU data protection framework and national data protection laws. Importantly, the GDPR is designed to give consumers more control of their personal information and applies identically across the EU. The enhanced rights and responsibilities of individuals and organisations are described by the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) on the GDPRandYou.ie website.

Key points:

  • Your privacy is respected.
  • STS only obtains information about you that is needed in order to provide a speech and language therapy service.
  • STS will ask for your consent before obtaining this information.
  • In most cases, STS will dispose of your information two years after your last appointment (some exceptions apply -- this is detailed in STS's Privacy Policy).
  • STS will keep your information safe.
  • STS will only share your information with others for specific purposes; your consent will be sought.
  • Further details on the Privacy Policy of STS are available on request.
